Sound Point names Cerberus veteran to lead CRE credit fundraising
The dedicated fundraising title indicates Sound Point will ask institutions to back its commercial real estate credit strategy separately.
Sound Point Capital Management has hired Faris AbiNader as head of real estate capital formation, putting one person in charge of institutional fundraising for its commercial real estate credit business, Institutional Real Estate, Inc. first reported. AbiNader arrives from Cerberus Capital Management, where as a managing director he represented the residential investment platform to institutional investors and investment consultants globally, after earlier senior roles in business development and capital formation at Ellington Management Group and EnTrust Global.
The move changes the product, not the customer. At Cerberus, AbiNader made the case for a residential real estate strategy before large institutional audiences; at Sound Point he will make the case for a commercial credit strategy before the same kind of audience. Capital formation is a relationship business, and the portable part of his work is the list and the credibility he built representing a dedicated platform.
The new title does more work than the résumé. A manager that plans to keep real estate credit raising as a line item inside a generalist fund does not need a head of real estate capital formation; a manager that plans to sell commercial real estate credit as its own product does. Sound Point is effectively telling the market that this book of business will stand on its own story, its own team, and its own fundraising effort rather than travel as an appendage of a broader alternatives pitch.
The term capital formation itself points toward originations. That is the language of a fund still building its investor base, not the language of a strategy that has already raised its capital and settled into reporting. Combined with a new hire whose career has been raising institutional money for specialized real estate platforms, the wording points to a coming vehicle or a series of separate accounts, even if the details have not been disclosed.
The IREI report does not disclose a fundraising target or a vehicle, so the scale of the mandate is unconfirmed, but the direction is not in doubt. AbiNader spent his last job representing a specific real estate platform to the institutions and consultants who move the largest allocations, and he will now represent a specific real estate credit platform to the same community, a hiring pattern that already says how Sound Point intends to present the strategy.
This publication has argued that the current cycle in commercial real estate debt is being handled with extensions and new capital rather than a wave of forced sales, and the firms with committed capital and a clear message are the ones that will supply the next round of loans. Sound Point just hired a specialist whose entire work history points to that task.
