National Real Estate Advisors promotes Ben Kanne to managing director of investments
Kanne, who helped launch the firm's 2021 data center fund, now oversees the investment team and the recommendations that reach the investment committee.
National Real Estate Advisors has promoted Ben Kanne to managing director of investments, handing him oversight of the sourcing, screening, underwriting, structuring and closing that turn a target list into closing volume across a platform the firm describes as developing, operating and managing commercial real estate and infrastructure projects nationwide. IREI reported the promotion on Sept. 30; Kanne, who joined National in 2020, will keep leading the investment recommendations that reach the investment committee while now overseeing the investment team itself, an arrangement the announcement frames as keeping investment activity disciplined and aligned with client objectives.
His record inside the firm is short and specific: the announcement credits him with helping launch the National Data Center Fund in 2021, with growing the Sabey Data Center Properties partnership into one of National's largest platforms—a relationship that now includes a recent investment by Ares Secondaries—and with building the medical office investment program. Data centers and medical office are the programs the firm names when it makes its own case, a fair indication of where the underwriting attention sits.
Because National develops, operates and manages as well as acquires, the promotion puts a developer's pipeline under one executive, and the executive now screening opportunities spent the past several years assembling a data center platform rather than a book of finished buildings. With construction starts frozen across much of commercial real estate, as this publication has argued, the build-over-buy trade is a wager on the entitlement calendar, and the promotion puts that kind of pipeline under one desk.
National's September gave some sense of where the pipeline points: our Sept. 2 report had Serac and National buying Greenway Plaza, an 18-story Houston office tower whose tenant roster runs to family offices and foundations—the tenant-specific income this publication has argued clears before commodity office does. Our Sept. 10 reporting then put Kevin Verdi, who has been running the firm's money, in line for the investment chief title in January 2027, with Jeffrey Kanne staying within reach.
The promotion announcement does not describe how Kanne's remit interacts with Verdi's investment chief title, and nothing in the material states a reporting line between the two; the mandates are given side by side. It does settle where origination, underwriting and the committee calendar now sit at a firm our records put at 48 employees. The next capital raise will indicate which of those programs National is funding next.
